Prudential Spirit of Volunteerism Top High School Volunteer of the Year Award

Kyle Freas, a senior at Plano West Senior High School, captured, for the second consecutive year, the Prudential Spirit of Volunteerism Top High School Volunteer of the Year Award. He was named among America’s 102 most outstanding youth volunteers – two from each state and the District of Columbia – through the annual awards program honoring young people for exemplary acts of volunteerism. Kyle founded a nonprofit organization called “Youth Together” that encourages students at elementary and middle schools to participate in a variety of projects to help homeless, abused and critically ill children.
Kyle Freas is a well-rounded high school student, his academic record is exemplary, he is a leader on his basketball and track teams, active in his church and in school clubs. He has distinguished himself within Texas by his enthusiastic work within the schools to organize and empower students to help those who need it the most. The “Youth Together” organization, which he conceived and developed, has even encompassed programs for grade school children to aid homeless animals. Other projects have grown out of Kyle’s love for reading and his conviction that this interest must be nurtured in all ages. Project Bookworm is a mentoring program that pairs high school students with kindergarten-through-second grade students to bring the joy of reading to young children. Members of his volunteer groups have held book drives to expand the libraries at local senior centers. Kyle’s “Youth Together” has worked with 100 schools in the past five years and raised over $80,000 working through students councils, honor societies, and student leadership and peer-assistance programs, while teaching students hands-on service to others.
